How it works
UF/IFAS Extension says a robotic mower uses a navigation system, such as a boundary wire or GPS, to define the mowing area, and a charging station where it docks on its own. It works within its set boundary and returns to its charging station as needed.
Small blades, frequent cuts
UF/IFAS says these mowers use small, sharp blades on a spinning disk. It says the general guideline still applies: remove no more than one-third of the leaf blade at a time.
What UF/IFAS lists as pros
UF/IFAS lists reduced labor and operator fatigue, lower noise than gasoline-powered mowers, and that they can improve turf density and overall lawn quality, citing published studies.
What UF/IFAS lists as limits
UF/IFAS says robotic mowers can be high in initial cost, may cut at a lower mowing height than is favorable for some Florida grasses, and require regular maintenance, such as blade replacement and battery checks.
The standard the CPSC names
The CPSC lists ANSI/OPEI 60335-2-107-2020, Particular Requirements for Robotic Battery Powered Electrical Lawnmowers, as a voluntary standard. We name it only. We do not reprint it or say any mower meets it.
Children and robotic mowers
UF/IFAS says a robotic mower works within its set boundary on its own. AAOS says to teach children to stay away from all lawn mowers, even those that are not currently in use, and to keep children and pets away from the lawn mower, especially when it is in use. The maker's manual sets when and where the mower may run; read it before you set one up.

FAQ
General information only. Read the operator's manual before you mow. Keep children and pets indoors or well away from the area you mow, and never let a child ride on a mower as a passenger. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that, in general, children should be at least 12 years old to operate a walk-behind power mower safely and at least 16 to operate a riding mower safely. Before you clear, adjust, or service the blade area, turn the mower off, wait for the blade to stop, and disconnect the spark plug wire; on a battery or corded electric mower, follow the manual to disconnect its power. Refuel outdoors, only with the engine off and cool. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and eye and hearing protection. In an emergency, call 911.
