Start with the manual
Ohio State says to use the maintenance schedule provided in the operator's manual. The CPSC says to check the manual for routine maintenance, including engine oil levels.
Engine off first
Ohio State says to shut off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire before performing maintenance and before unclogging the mowing deck.
Oil
Ohio State says to maintain proper oil levels and lubrication of moving parts. Use the oil type and amount your manual lists.
Spark plug and filters
LSU AgCenter says the end of the season is a good time to inspect the spark plug and the air and fuel filters, and to replace them if needed. It says to check the operator's manual for the correct plug gap.
Deck and guards
Ohio State says to remove excess grass clippings from the mowing deck, and to inspect and adjust deflector guards and safety features, replacing them if necessary.
Parts and emissions
EPA says that for routine maintenance you still need to avoid changes that might increase emissions. Follow the maker's instructions.

FAQ
General information only. Read the operator's manual before you mow. Keep children and pets indoors or well away from the area you mow, and never let a child ride on a mower as a passenger. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that, in general, children should be at least 12 years old to operate a walk-behind power mower safely and at least 16 to operate a riding mower safely. Before you clear, adjust, or service the blade area, turn the mower off, wait for the blade to stop, and disconnect the spark plug wire; on a battery or corded electric mower, follow the manual to disconnect its power. Refuel outdoors, only with the engine off and cool. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and eye and hearing protection. In an emergency, call 911.
